One of the most wonderful, peculiar surprises of Bali is how you can drive through miles of potholes, hanging electrical wires, and dodgy abandoned buildings, then turn one corner and stumble upon some of the most fabulous waterfront resorts. Don’t be alarmed if you find yourself cruising down one of these back roads - you haven’t misread the directions, you’re simply on the way to discovering one of the best kept secrets of the island.
The Karma Group was founded in Asia and many members of the founding team are based in Bali, so this resort is particularly special. Walking through the doors of Karma Kandara is like entering a haven of rest, far from the rush and noise of town and covered in a blanket of warm salty breezes. The resort hangs off a cliff by the ocean and offers some of the most impressive views of the Indian Ocean that we saw during our entire tour of Bali. The 74 villas are connected by a series of narrow, steep paths brimming with lush bougainvilla that include routes to a spa, restaurant, infinity pool and fabulous beach gondola. The rocky paths are quite narrow, so we suggest skipping the hike and travel in style courtesy of the resort’s buggy instead, stopping to snap scenic pictures along the way while instantly slipping into holiday mood.
